What the law requires

What every Luxembourg company has to pay for.

Before comparing prices, it helps to know what is compulsory. These obligations apply whether you use an accountant or not, so they set the minimum work involved.

Bookkeeping

Every company must keep accounts suited to the nature and size of its activity, using double-entry bookkeeping, and record transactions without delay. Books and supporting documents must be kept for ten years.

Annual accounts

The managers must submit the annual accounts to the shareholders within six months of the year-end, and the approved accounts are filed with the Luxembourg Business Register within a month. Managers who fail to do so can be fined.

Corporate tax returns

Companies file their corporate income tax and municipal business tax returns by 31 December of the year after the tax year. Companies also owe a minimum net wealth tax, from €535 a year depending on the balance sheet total.

VAT returns

A VAT-registered business files one return a year below €112,000 turnover, quarterly returns up to €620,000 and monthly returns above, each with an annual return. Businesses established in Luxembourg with turnover up to €50,000 can, in most cases, use the VAT franchise and not charge VAT.

What drives the price

Why two companies pay different fees.

Accounting is priced on the work involved. These are the factors that change it most.

Number of transactions

Every invoice, receipt and bank line has to be recorded and reconciled. It is the main factor in the monthly fee.

Employees

Payslips, social security declarations and payroll entries add work each month.

VAT frequency

One annual return costs less than twelve monthly ones. Your turnover decides which applies.

State of your records

Up-to-date documents are cheaper to process than missing years that need rebuilding.

Legal form and structure

An SA, a group with intra-company loans or several shareholders means more formalities.

Extra needs

Advisory, budgeting, dividend decisions or changes to the company are priced on top.

Comparing quotes

Five questions to ask any accountant.

The cheapest monthly fee is not always the cheapest year. These questions help you compare like with like.

  1. Is the annual accounts preparation included? Many monthly prices cover bookkeeping only. Ask what the year-end costs on top.
  2. Are the tax returns included?Corporate income tax, business tax and net wealth tax returns are due every year.
  3. How are VAT returns charged?Per return, or included? Twelve monthly returns add up.
  4. What happens if I have more transactions?Check how the price changes when your business grows.
  5. Who will I deal with, and how quickly do they reply?A low price is worth less if questions wait weeks for an answer.
